The Role
Phasic prints heat exchangers for data center cooling, each one a single piece of metal. We are building our own metal printing lab near BWI, and we need the person who runs it day to day.
This is not a job printing brackets. You get your hands on a brand-new, state-of-the-art metal printer: large-format, with multiple lasers, the class of machine most technicians never get to run. And the parts are hard. Our heat exchangers have thin walls, dense internal channels and novel geometries generated by our AI design platform. They push what metal printing can reliably produce, and you are the person who makes them come out right.
You run the printer and everything around it: powder, builds, heat treatment, cutting parts off the plate, and machining them to finish. You work alongside our Additive Manufacturing Manager, who decides how parts get printed, and our engineers, who design them. Your job is making it happen at the machine, safely and the same way every time.
We want someone who can do both: run a metal printer and machine what comes off it.
What You'll Do
Run the printer
- Set up builds: load powder, install and level build plates, prepare the inert gas, and run pre-build checks.
- Monitor builds and respond to alarms. Some builds run for days, so expect occasional early or late visits to start or finish one.
- Unload builds safely, depowder parts and plates, then sieve and recycle powder.
- Handle routine machine maintenance: filters, recoater, optics and chamber cleaning.
Post-process and machine
- Run stress-relief heat treatment in our inert-gas furnace.
- Cut parts off build plates with the wire EDM or band saw.
- Machine critical features on the CNC, such as port threads and sealing faces.
- Remove supports, then blast and clean parts.
- Resurface build plates so they can be reused.
Keep the lab safe and traceable
- Follow, and help write, the procedures for metal powder handling, inert gas and the powder room.
- Keep build records (powder lot, plate, machine logs) so every part can be traced.
- Do basic inspection: dimensional checks against drawings, plus visual inspection.
- Keep the lab clean, stocked and organized.
Work with the team
- With our Additive Manufacturing Manager: run builds to their process, report what you see at the machine, and help work out why a print failed and what to change next time.
- With our thermal engineers: tell them what prints and machines cleanly and what fights back, and turn test coupons and prototype parts around fast so new designs get tested sooner.
- With the VP of Operations, your manager: keep the lab running day to day, from supplies and service visits to safety, and flag early anything that threatens a schedule.
What You Bring
Required
- 2+ years hands-on operating metal laser powder bed fusion machines. Polymer and binder jet experience does not count toward this.
- Hands-on experience with wire EDM, CNC machining, or both.
- Safe handling of metal powders and inert gas, including PPE and respirator use.
- Can read engineering drawings and measure with calipers, micrometers and gauges.
- Careful, consistent record keeping.
- A mechanical troubleshooter who notices when something sounds or looks wrong.
- Able to lift 50 lb and work in full PPE.
Nice to have
- Large-format, multi-laser machines.
- Vacuum or inert-gas heat treatment furnaces.
- CAM programming for CNC.
- Build preparation software.
- A certificate or associate degree in machining, manufacturing technology or additive manufacturing.
- Work in aerospace, defense, medical or another field with strict part traceability.
Where and When
- Full-time, on site at our lab near BWI.
- You need to live close enough to get to the lab when a build starts or finishes.
- Salary: $75,000 to $100,000.
- Expected start: early 2027.
Why Phasic
- Run a state-of-the-art, large-format metal printer on parts that are anything but routine.
- Be one of the first people in our new lab and help set how it runs.
- Work on hardware that ships to customers, not a research project.
- Be part of a small team that values craft, speed with rigor, and straightforward feedback.
